Estates and Building Services are responsible for the management of the Council’s land and property estate including the Council’s office space, sports and leisure facilities, libraries, museums and schools. It is the largest land and property portfolio in the City.


As part of our continued growth and success we are looking to recruit apprentices to join our high-performing team (from September 2021) with a view to becoming the next generation of property leaders.


Estates and Building Services determine how the Council’s land and buildings are used, manage and maintain the properties, and lead on the construction of new buildings and investment in existing buildings whilst reducing the impact our land and property has on the environment.


This is an exciting time to join us as the industry is changing more quickly than ever before. The successful candidates can go on to achieve academic and professional qualifications to launch a successful career in a dynamic industry.


In addition to gaining valuable practical experience, successful candidates will benefit from a Council-sponsored apprenticeship that will involve regular attendance at a local college to undertake a qualification at level 3, 4 or 5 that is relevant to the job role. These courses are expected to take up to 2 years, during which time candidates will be expected to progress within the team by applying their knowledge and skills to their chosen role.


The opportunities available are listed below and candidates may express interest in up to three positions. Candidates are asked to complete an application form (link below) and, as part of the application process, express their preference in order.

Facilities management apprentice

Workplace


This will be based in our Facilities Management Workplace team who are responsible for the safe and efficient running of the Council’s office estate. The FM assistant will liaise with internal staff and customers on a day to day basis. The candidate will study a level 3/4 Facilities Management qualification. The role is suited to a customer-focussed effective problem-solver who is a confident communicator.


Soft FM


This will be based in our Facilities Management team which focusses on the people-based services for running buildings such as cleaning, security and premises management. The candidate will study a level 3/4 Facilities Management qualification. The is suited to a confident communicator that aspires to having a successful career in the management of people.


Hard FM


This will be based in our Facilities Management team which focusses on the maintenance of Council owned properties. They will work alongside our engineers, building inspectors and maintenance planners who instruct contractors to undertake works on our sites. The candidate will progress to be a qualified engineer and study a Building Services qualification in engineering. This suits a technically-minded candidate that has good practical judgement and is an effective communicator.

Business support (data analytics) apprentice

This post is based within our Performance and Information team and is suited to a candidate that has attention to detail in a digital environment. The successful candidate will support our property information service with their work. Suited to an organised and disciplined individual, with an eye for detail, the candidate will undertake a qualification in Business Analysis and will progress to be a qualified Business Analyst.

Business support (customer engagement) apprentice

This role is based within our Business Support / Business Development teams and will be customer-focussed, involving the promotion of our division’s services to our customers - including schools and other Councils – capturing their feedback to enable us to continuously improve. The candidate will undertake a level 3 apprenticeship course in Business Administration and Marketing that will be the starting point in their career in business development. This suits an enthusiastic, creative and confident communicator with a passion for customer service.

Additional information

All apprentices will be paid at national minimum wage or living wage depending on age.
