This is an exciting time to join the Museums and Galleries service as a new strategic vision is now in place and several significant capital projects are in the pipeline. Although Leicester is already full of world class art and culture the city council is committed to growth and the vision is to create experiences that make Leicester truly special.
This is fantastic opportunity for an Outreach Officer to work closely with and support the Community Engagement Officer with the delivery of the service’s Community Engagement Programme. As part of the engagement team, you will aim to bring the museum experience to the communities and people of Leicester to increase access and participation particularly from target audiences. At the city’s flagship New Walk Museum, a new space is being co-created with Leicester’s diverse communities . Arts Council England’s National Portfolio Organisation funding is enabling the service to develop exciting new projects within the NPO plan which the post holder will be working on.
Partly office based, although much of the time will be spent within community settings working with groups. You will be required to work outside of regular hours (evenings and weekends) when required.
As a confident Outreach Officer, you’ll enable people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds to participate in heritage and museum programmes and support the development and delivery of museum activities in the community such as Pop-Up Museums in Libraries, festivals, local shopping centres etc. You’ll develop and maintain partnerships with organisations including the cultural and voluntary sectors in order to contribute to the delivery of activities/projects/programmes to reach diverse audiences such as Leicester’s refugee and asylum seeker communities and participate in national initiatives such as Refugee Week and Black History Season. Supporting the delivery of the museums service business plan, you’ll help to support income generation through successful grant applications and other external funding.
With experience of community engagement work and developing audiences, preferably within a heritage/cultural environment or community outreach sector, you’ll understand the barriers to access to museums for communities such as migrants and asylum seekers. You'll understand how to utilise museum collections to engage community groups and will have experience of successfully developing and delivering projects and exhibitions with them. You'll have excellent communication skills to work with consultants, partners and organisations as well as the confidence to make and develop new contacts with communities. Consultation and evaluation will be embedded in all your work. With your ability to think creatively, you’ll develop strategies in order to engage and develop relationships with groups who do not currently access the museum offer.
