This role works as one of a small team who provide an important support function for elected Councillors in enabling them to undertake their scrutiny role effectively. The role involves undertaking high level research, evaluation of policy, best practice and legislation and local interpretation of regional / national policies across a diverse range of topics and Council service areas. As a Scrutiny Support Officer, you will also assist in continuing to develop an effective approach to scrutiny within the Council and will be involved in liaising and working with elected members, senior officers as well as a wide range of external organisations and stakeholders.
The role offers variety both in the areas of work it covers and in the diversity of organisations and stakeholders involved in the scrutiny process. You will be expected to facilitate and support a number of Scrutiny Committees and Task Groups as well as help ensure the effective delivery of the Council’s scrutiny work programmes, aligned to wider Council policy and strategy.
We are looking for someone who is confident and experienced in working with a range of stakeholders at a senior level and who is highly organised and able to manage multiple tasks. If you have a successful track record in research, analysis and policy evaluation and are looking to apply this across a range of themes and issues this role offers that opportunity and variety.
You will act as a key point of contact for Scrutiny Chairs, Elected Members and senior officers in relation to scrutiny work programmes and liaise with services and divisions and external partners, whilst developing and supporting support the Council’s Scrutiny function, including facilitating activities such as regular meetings, briefings and in-depth scrutiny reviews.
You will attend Scrutiny Committees, Commissions, Task Groups, site visits, to provide support to members in relation to policy issues, and ongoing actions and work on the work programme, at these meetings
What you will need
You will need experience of working under pressure, in an organisation undergoing significant transformational change, in a complex environment, along with experience of working effectively with a range of partner organisations and stakeholders, including those at a senior level. You will have experience of managing multiple complex projects or activities, with a track record in relation to the delivery of high quality research and analysis which has clearly influenced decision making.
