As a Planning Service we aim to proactively plan to help shape the City over the next 17 years and beyond, balancing the need for new homes and jobs against the need to protect the heritage and green environment We are now embarking on a new phase of regeneration and placemaking as we progress with our new Local Plan.

We are looking for two highly-motivated and ambitious Senior Development Management Planning Officers to take a proactive role in leading negotiations with applicants on an interesting and varied caseload of Major planning applications. We want exceptional candidates to make a valuable contribution to our Planning Service; a service that brings together Development Management, Strategic Planning, Urban Design and other specialists.

The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate their ability to efficiently and effectively deliver successful outcomes.

Your role

As a Senior Planner you will undertake the more complex and senior level work of the Major Development Management Team and planning service and make recommendations and decisions accordingly. You will provide expert policy and technical guidance and recommendations on planning and related matters to participants of the planning process. With the ability to mentor more junior staff you will provide guidance, advice and supervision to other staff as and when required and deputise for and assist the team leader and take the lead in their absence. With the ability to clearly communicate, you will prepare and present evidence or reports to public inquiries, courts, committees, or public meetings in your area of expertise and responsibility. You will also undertake site inspections, surveys, consultations, negotiations and public participation as required.

What you will need

To thrive in this role, you must have a good fundamental and technical knowledge as well as an understanding of all relevant planning legislation and policies. With good problem-solving skill and relevant experience in development management you will have the ability to handle a number of complex planning applications and/or planning appeals, contraventions and enforcement cases. You will show excellent communication and negotiation skills to deal with public, members, other officers, businesses, other professional groups and local authorities. You will be working to tight deadlines and be responsible for keeping planning records up to date, therefore good organisational skills are key. With practical understanding of the entire planning process including policy formulation, development management, urban design and specialist input, you will have the ability to write comprehensive and accurate planning reports.
