About the job

We are looking for a self-motivated Skilled Cemetery Operative to undertake grave digging, horticultural work and other duties in accordance with Codes of Practice and current legislation.

Based at either Gilroes Cemetery or Saffron Hill Cemetery, you will work in a small team and under the guidance of the Cemeteries Team Manager. Liaising with Funeral Directors and members of the clergy you will discuss issues in preparation for future burials and deal with requirements for different faiths and cultures.

You'll be able to work on a rota system to cover out of our burials and be willing to occasionally work in the crematorium to cover holidays as and when needed.

Your role

As a Skilled Cemetery Operative, you'll prepare graves for burial, backfilling and subsequent aftercare either mechanically or manually using shoring, shuttering and plant equipment. Locating graves using cemetery plans and maps, you'll prepare and dress graves for funerals as well as level and turf graves and the surrounding areas. You'll be responsible for operating and cleansing powered and manual hand tools specialised plant and other equipment. On occasions you may be required to carry out exhumations, assist in the development of soft and hard landscaping as well as other activities in aspect of horticulture work. You'll ensure compliance with all legislation, and that safe working practises are maintained and adhered to.

What you'll need

You'll have experience of cemetery work including the digging and backfilling of graves either mechanically or manually, as well as experience of outdoor work using construction or agricultural machinery. With qualification in Cemetery Operatives Training Scheme, NVQ Level 2 in Amenity Horticulture and PA1/PA6 Chemical Spraying certificates, you'll also have knowledge of basic maintenance, motor vehicles or other mechanical equipment. With empathy and compassion, you 'll be able to deal sensitively with members of the public and others in times of personal stress and grief. Using basic administrative skills, you'll ensure records of interments are accurate and up to date as well as complete all paperwork relevant to the cemetery and grounds maintenance service.
