About the job

As part of the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Support Service, the Learning, Communication and Interaction Team (LCI) is peripatetic, who support and promote the education of pupils with learning, communication and interaction needs, including specific learning difficulties, language and communication difficulties or autism, in Leicester city schools. The team is made of specialist teachers, teaching assistants and an interactive play specialist.


We are currently looking for an experienced Teaching Assistant to join our team at Leicester city council. As a Teaching Assistant within the LCI team you will manage a caseload, under the direction of a teacher and work with school staff and pupils to provide guidance on pupils with specific learning difficulties, language and communication difficulties or autism. This will include assessing, monitoring and supporting with some direct teaching.


Based at New Parks House, you will spend most of the time in schools supporting staff and pupils however you will be required to travel to various sites to support training where needed and facilitate the sharing of good practices and networking across Leicester city schools. 

Your role

Following the SEND code of practise, you will work with LCI teachers to support teams in the implementation of individual programmes, as advised by specialist teachers. You will model and deliver programmes to individuals and small groups across all age ranges. With your ability to listen and communication effectively both verbal and in written form, you will directly work with pupils to understand their learning and social needs. Using your experience to assess pupils and model to Teaching Assistants in school, you will show how to complete assessments and interventions.

What you will need

With GCSE’s in Maths and English, you will have significant experience of working with pupils with Special Educational Needs in at least two different mainstream / special school setting. You will have the ability to deliver a range of bespoke interventions to both groups and individual pupils across all key stages as well as the ability to adapt skills to a variety of settings and to different age and ability groups. Using your experience of observing children with a range of SEN needs including specific learning difficulties, speech, language and communication needs and autism, you will be able to put others at ease, gain trust and build relationships in a short space of time.

Additional information

This post will be full time (33.5 hours per week) however part time hours will be considered.
