Working at the council | Business Support
“We’re doing what we can to support young people. Helping them understand they can build a career in local government.”
Nadia Ansari, Executive Support Team Leader
Our business support teams work with every area of the council, providing the vital administrative support they need to work smoothly and efficiently for the people of Leicester. From professional Admin and Business Support Officers to Executive Assistants and receptionists to Electoral Service Officers, we work behind the scenes to ensure the council delivers excellent services.
By keeping processes running, producing key documentation and maintaining records, we enable colleagues such as social workers, planners and directors to focus on their vital work. With the introduction of new technologies, it’s less about bureaucracy and more about adding value to support each business area. By being innovative in our approach and working cost-effectively, we help every area of the council to make the most of their experience and expertise and provide value for money for people across the city.
Typical roles in Business Support
Administration and Business Support Officers
As one of our Admin and Business Support Officers, you’ll have the chance to work in a variety of council departments, from central departments to libraries or community centres, and develop your skills and knowledge. If you have specific experience of a particular area, such as Legal, Finance or Procurement, you may start in that area. But if you’re enthusiastic, able to communicate with a wide range of people and willing to innovate, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to work in different parts of the council.
Join our team of Executive Assistants and you’ll be providing essential support to the council’s most senior managers and councillors. From dealing with phone calls and mail, to organising their diaries, arranging meetings and ensuring they have all the relevant information they need, you’ll play a key role in keeping the council running smoothly and effectively.
Focus on … Procurement Specialists
Working in our Procurement department offers a wide range of challenges that you’re unlikely to find elsewhere. The sheer diversity of the council’s work means you’ll find your skills are constantly challenged in a variety of contexts. So, one day, you could be involved in buying systems to manage traffic flow and the next you might be looking at procuring vital social care provision. It’s interesting and varied work with a caring employer that aims to ensure you ensure a good balance between work and life.
Meet some of the team
I enjoy my role because my line manager supports and encourages me, always recognising my potential to progress. This means I’m able to be involved in different projects and I can be seconded into a role to progress if required. The council is always evolving, and I enjoy being part of a team where you can learn, develop and evolve.
Apprentice Business Administrator - Adult Mental Health
I joined Leicester City Council in January 2019 because I wanted to help the people of Leicester and give something back to the community. Working here, no two days are the same. I enjoy getting up in the morning and knowing I’m going to help somebody and hopefully improve their day by getting them the help they need.
