Planning and Transport

Creating a great city for people to live, work and enjoy depends on the new homes, workplaces and environments that we improve and create and also how easy it is to get around. Join us and you could play a major role in regenerating and developing key parts of the city.

You might be preparing exciting new plans for future city development or dealing with planning applications, from house extensions to major new housing developments. Or you may be helping to preserve and improve Leicester’s built and natural heritage.

You could also be involved in developing transport strategies for the future or constructing new transport infrastructure that supports Leicester’s development and encourages people to travel by bus, walk or cycle. Or you could help to maintain and operate the streets and car parks. Whichever part of our division you join, you’ll be helping to shape the future of Leicester.

Our Planning and Transport teams

Planning

Join us and you could play a major role in regenerating and developing key parts of the city. As a planner or surveyor, you could be at the heart of major city centre or waterside developments, working with private developers to enhance the city. You may be contributing to a range of special projects, such as our recent city squares project. Or you might be helping to enforce regulations and preserve the integrity of the city’s buildings.

Transport

In Transport, we deliver major highway improvements and repair the infrastructure and introduce initiatives to improve air quality, such as our grants for electric taxis. Join us and you’ll enjoy the opportunity to make a visible difference to the city. You may be involved in developing a transport strategy and infrastructure that supports the city’s development. Or you might help to promote innovative strategies to manage traffic flows, or to encourage cycling, walking and bus use.

Focus on ... Project Managers

As one of our Project Manager, you’ll have the opportunity to work on a huge variety of stimulating projects that you won’t find anywhere else. For example, Leicester is regarded as an innovator and leader in encouraging and increasing the adoption of walking and cycling around the city. You’ll not only be helping to build on this legacy by reshaping the city, but you’ll be able to see the results of your work all around you, in the tangible changes you help to introduce across Leicester.

Meet some of the team

Aranvir

Graduate Planning Policy Officer

Overall the council’s a perfect place to start and develop your career. As a recent graduate, I have a lot of enthusiasm and ideas and my colleagues at all levels have encouraged me to move forward with my initiatives. This is supplemented by the Young Employees Network, which gives younger employees across the council professional, social, and personal support.

Brett

Major Project Site Team Leader

Back in 1990, I was advised to get a trade, so I joined the Council’s YTS apprentice scheme in the civil engineering section. Obviously, I knew nothing about City Highways, but I believe we’ve both developed and transformed since then! Nowadays, I enjoy walking through Leicester with my family and seeing the difference we’re making to the landscape.
