Education at the council
In the Learning and Inclusion department of the council we aim to make sure that every child in Leicester has access to the education they need. That’s why our work reaches a long way beyond supporting schools. Working closely with our colleagues in Social Care, we also have a major responsibility to remove any barriers to education for looked-after children, vulnerable children and those with disabilities.
Join us and you’ll enjoy the chance to contribute to our work as we tackle the on-going challenges of providing high quality education for all, in a rapidly changing landscape. You could help us to improve performance in all schools across the city, or to support children with special needs and disabilities, those being educated at home, or those excluded from education. Whichever team you join, you’ll help us to ensure children in Leicester get the best educational start in life.
Our Education teams
Educational Performance
In this team, you’ll be working with schools and teachers across Leicester to ensure teachers and staff have access to the best available training. This includes supporting schools in recruiting good teachers. As well as working with state-maintained schools, we have a good working relationship with local academies and the Regional Schools Commissioner, so you may also be involved in sharing best practice.
SEN and Disabilities
Join this team and you’ll be helping to remove barriers to education for children with a wide range of issues. As a member of one of our specialist teams, you could work with children who have issues with hearing, sight or emotional health, or those who have been, or are at risk of being excluded. Working closely with them and their families, you’ll help assess them to create Education, Care and Health Plans (ECHPs) and ensure they have the educational support they need.
Virtual School
We have around 700 looked-after children who go to school in Leicester. As part of our statutory responsibilities as corporate parents, we have a Virtual School that champions their education and monitors and supports their educational attainment. Join this major team and you’ll work closely with schools across Leicester, ensuring looked-after children have the extra support, motivation and positive experiences they need to get the most from their education.
Focus on … Educational Psychologists
At Leicester City Council, we’re committed to removing any barriers to education for all children. As well as working with children and schools in Leicester, we outsource our Educational Psychology service to other local authorities. This means when you join us, you’ll have the chance to work with a variety of schools and children across a number of diverse areas, from inner cities to rural villages.

I am responsible for improving the outcomes of children in our Primary, Secondary and Special Schools across the city. I’ve been a school leader, a senior leader and a headteacher in schools in Leicester and around the country. My current role is quite different from working in schools, but still enjoyable!
