Leadership and Management

As a leader your focus is to inspire, motivate and get the best out of your teams and to make sure they have everything they need to deliver the best outcomes for the people of Leicester. It’s not just about knowing the technical aspects of your role - although, of course, you do need to understand the complexities of your particular area.

But more importantly, it’s up to you to make sure your people have a framework that enables them to deliver on the council’s priorities and the Mayoral vision. Because, by putting your people at the heart of everything you do, you’ll ensure we enhance life for everyone in our great city. So, as a leader in the council, at whatever level, it’s your responsibility to put your people first. In return, we’ll give you autonomy over your own area to ensure you produce the right outcomes for residents. That means you’ll have the scope to challenge the status quo, question the way we do things and introduce appropriate innovation to improve results. In short, you’ll lead us into the future.

The qualities we look for in our leaders

Achieve

We’ve identified a number of qualities that our leaders need to show in the workplace. Join us and you’ll be expected to focus on outcomes, agree objectives and hold your teams and individual team members to account. It’s also about developing a shared purpose for your team and creating an environment that enables them to develop and achieve results.

Connected

Whatever part of the council you join, you’ll find that all our work is interlinked. So, you’ll need the character to build strong, trusting relationships across departments and foster positive relationships within your team. As a confident communicator, you’ll have open, honest conversations with both your team and other leaders, challenging ideas and offering constructive criticism.

Inspire

At the council we’re looking for inspirational and motivational leaders who allow their teams the space and time to be innovative and creative. With the confidence to support your team’s development and give them autonomy and freedom, you’ll enable them to do their best work.

Reflect

As a leader at the council, you’ll need to show that you can reflect, analyse and develop both yourself and your team, based on your observations. This means you should encourage your team to reflect and act on evaluation and feedback. At the same time, you’ll create a culture of continuous improvement, motivating your team to use successes and setbacks as opportunities to learn and develop.

Are you our next leader?

We’re looking for people leaders. Inspirational and motivational managers who understand team dynamics and know how to get the best out of each individual, so the team delivers. You’ll know the value of having a varied and diverse team - one where people feel confident in voicing different opinions, respect each other’s views and accept their judgement. As a coach, a mentor and a cheerleader, most of all, you’ll always ensure that your whole team keeps its focus on achieving the best outcomes for the people of Leicester.

So, are you a Leicester leader?

Meet some of the team

Miranda

Director of Delivery, Communications and Political Governance

The City Mayor rightly sets high expectations in terms of what’s delivered for the people of Leicester. This creates a sense of pace and accountability and encourages us to look for creative and innovative approaches. It’s great to work in such a varied role, in a positive, supportive team and to feel so closely connected to the city I live in.

Kamal

City Barrister and Head of Standards

Leicester is my home city and I wanted to practice law in a place where I personally cared about the outcomes rather than the profits. The work culture is very open and modern - not at all stuffy. It’s also a true meritocracy, as revealed by the profile of senior leaders. Talent is rewarded, but a sense of humour is essential.

Alison

Chief Operating Officer

I grew up in Leicester and enjoy being involved in growing the city’s economy, transforming neighbourhoods and the city centre. A large employer such as the council offers fantastic opportunities. I didn’t know I wanted to be or could be an accountant, but the council showed me a career path and supported me all the way.
