Legal Services

Working in legal services at Leicester City Council offers you a breadth of legal experience that you simply won’t find anywhere else. The council is a huge organisation with complex policies, and it operates in a highly regulated environment. This means we work on a full range of high-quality cases and often deal with £multi-million contracts. As a local authority with unique responsibilities for children in care, working here also gives you the chance to gain early experience in child protection work.

In our work, the legal services teams are accountable to the council’s elected members, who are ultimately accountable to the people of Leicester. This means we always have to consider how to protect the reputation of the council and the city. It gives everything we do an extremely high profile and means you always need to be aware of how you’re perceived.

Our Legal Services teams

Procurement

Working closely with the contract lawyers, our procurement team advises the council on how it spends its annual budget. Join this ten-strong team and you could be advising on the purchase of everything from lawnmowers to residential care places. In fact, the only areas we don’t cover are IT and adult social care. As every piece of procurement goes through a value-for-money review, you could be involved in a range of interesting projects. At the same time, you’ll enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you’re helping to ensure the council’s budget is spent wisely.

Registrars and Coroners

Join this team and you’ll be involved in providing administrative support to either the coroner’s court or the registrars’ service. In the coroner’s court, this could mean supporting coroner inquests. If you join the registrars’ support team, you may be involved areas such as replacing birth, marriage or death certificates or citizenship ceremonies. We offer flexible working and part-time opportunities, as well as a friendly, supportive atmosphere and the chance to develop existing skills and learn new ones.

Focus on … Childcare Solicitors

This is an excellent opportunity to protect some of the most vulnerable people in Leicester and to be involved in a variety of challenging and interesting cases. With a commitment to owning your caseload, you’ll enjoy the mix of desk and court work, working with multiple agencies to protect children. From reading case law and writing witness statements to attending court and potentially working with some of the UK’s best advocates, you’ll be involved at every level of potentially complex cases.

Meet some of the team

Suraiya

Solicitor

I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and also develop my career. I can do both here. At first, I didn’t get the training contract I wanted but was offered a Legal Officer’s role with a brilliant, nurturing team and I gained some invaluable experience. Now I’m fully trained and enjoying stimulating, high quality work with a supportive, inspiring and fun team. We all have a shared purpose and everyone here is approachable, from senior to junior.

Lynn

Head of Information Governance and Risk

I joined the council to make a difference locally and improve people’s lives. It helps that I have really committed colleagues who want to make Leicester a better place for residents. They go the extra mile as public servants, taking on all sorts of different roles, as COVID-19 has shown. We’re a big family that support each other and we pull out all the stops to make sure residents get the support they need in an emergency.

Shireen

Qualified Lawyer

I was expecting a very formal working environment but was pleasantly surprised by the welcoming attitude and support I received. Private legal practice doesn’t afford much in the way of varied experience and I’ve gained more knowledge and skills working here than at private firms. The opportunities, benefits and support have been by far the best in my career.
