Human Resources

People are at the heart of every service we deliver in the council and in HR, it’s our job to make sure that we, as an organisation, enable our people to do their best work. That means guiding managers in their decision-making, ensuring we create a positive organisational culture so that our people can thrive and operate with creativity and drive, through to managing change, supporting our people through new ways of working to be as effective as they can be.

Join us and you’ll be amazed at the variety and diversity in our work and in the council as a whole. We deal with every single one of the 6,000 people who work here, so you could be supporting social care workers one minute and then meeting gardeners in one of our parks the next - no two days are ever the same. The challenge is to adapt your approach by understanding these different groups’ needs, so we can keep them at the heart of what we do and enables our people to achieve great things, making a huge positive impact on people's lives.

Typical roles in Human Resources

Health and Safety

As a member of this team, you could be involved in a huge range of health and safety projects. The sheer diversity of the council’s work means you could be dealing with anything from health risks in a public leisure centre, out and about in our school environments to safety at a major transport hub or office assessments.

HR Operations

Join this team and you’ll be partnering our managers on everything from workforce planning, coaching and reviews, to disciplinary procedures. Advising on employment law, you’ll work closely with your assigned business areas and build strong relationships with managers and our trade unions colleagues. This means you’ll quickly become an expert on everything about those teams.

Management Information

Everything we do in the management information team enables the council to make decisions about its workforce based on data and evidence. Join us and you could be involved in analysing a range of data and reporting to the council to inform a variety of strategies, initiatives and project work. Your role may also include responding to information requests and providing valuable information to other HR teams to support their work.

Organisational Development

This is the team that looks after everything to do with the council’s work culture. Join us and you’ll be involved in a variety of projects that enable our people to do their best work. You might be helping to create learning and development approaches, identifying relevant leadership qualities, or building a coaching management framework. It’s about understanding the challenges and opportunities and developing the best solutions.

Policy and Projects

In this team, you’ll be helping to develop the policies and guidance to set the direction of how the council works. This involves looking at legislation and case law and examining best practice. This includes supporting the council’s statutory returns in areas such as the gender pay gap or helping to ensure we pay fairly as part of the job evaluation team.

Resourcing

The Resourcing Team manages all our recruitment activity, ensuring that you - our candidates - have the best user experience when applying for jobs with us, through to being hired and joining the council. Including this careers website. Which we're particularly proud of.

And you’ll contribute to every stage of the process, including carrying out audits, identifying issues and working with managers to develop policy or change culture.

Since I joined in 2005, I’ve had opportunities to manage projects and teams, and to be seconded into other areas of the business. I’ve met some wonderful, warm, friendly and dedicated people who care about their work, the services they deliver and the outcomes for customers. It’s been everything I expected when I joined: varied, passionate, committed, dynamic and complex.
