Our approach to construction

Plan

If you have a strategic approach with the ability to develop innovative concepts and turn them into reality, this is the area for you. It’s about working with a variety of clients across the council and creating a strategy for our assets by reviewing needs, proposing cost-effective solutions and deciding the best way forward. That could mean building new facilities or repurposing existing ones.

Create

Join our Create team and you’ll be instrumental in managing major £2.5-£3 million construction projects, such as building a new school or theatre. It’s high level project management, from commissioning the work and recruiting architects and engineers, to delivering the new build. If you have the commitment, skill and dedication to leave your mark on a major UK city, we can offer plenty of opportunities.

Operate

As a corporate landlord, we manage a large amount of property and assets across Leicester. Our Operate team is all about hands-on facilities management. Whether you’re a facilities manager, an electrical engineer, or a porter, cleaner or security guard, you’ll help make sure our property portfolio is managed and maintained effectively. This means you’ll need to be highly motivated and dedicated, with the drive to do your best every time.

Redefine

As chartered surveyors and property managers, we value council assets and evaluate how to make the most of each building = maintenance, development or sale. We also manage a £130 million investment portfolio and a corporate estate including commercial offices that generate rent. Join us and you’ll enjoy the scope to put forward your ideas, challenge convention and use your commercial knowledge to create value for the city.

Focus on … Valuation Surveyors

In this high-profile role, you’ll be advising the council on the value of assets they’re considering buying or selling. With a wide and varied remit, you’ll need to consider the potential environmental, technological or social impact of any asset, so it provides the best value for the city. It’s a huge responsibility, as you’ll not only be advising at the highest levels, but you’ll also be helping to shape the future of Leicester.

Jacob

Gas Service and Heating Engineer

Since I joined the council in 2008, I’ve worked as a carpenter, plumber and electrician. In my current role, I carry out gas installations, service and repair work. It’s a tight, friendly and supportive team who come together to get the job done. I enjoy my work and it’s a fair and rewarding place to work, with excellent benefits.

Matthew

Housing Technician

Career prospects in my department are excellent and progression is actively encouraged. The work itself is varied and can be challenging, with different emergency situations arising. No days are the same, which helps to develop my knowledge and experience. I feel I’m making a difference to ensure that our customers have safe and healthy places to live in.

Kerry

Gas Service and Heating Engineer

What I enjoy most about my work is being part of the team. Especially during winter when we all pull together, because customers are relying on us to keep them warm. The flexible working hours and the local work are also important to me, as I juggle a full-time job with raising a two-year old single-handedly.

Stefan

Housing Technician

I applied for a council apprenticeship as a way to restart my career. At 30 years old, I was hesitant about starting an apprenticeship, but the council made it clear that everyone would have an equal chance. Now, after a five-year apprenticeship covering seven trades, I’m in my third council role, which involves visiting tenants and properties across Leicester.

Roger

Building Inspector

I’ve always worked in the building trade and wanted to better myself, so when the council offered a secondment as a building inspector, I took it and I’ve never looked back. The work’s different and challenging, there are opportunities for career progression and I have good relationships with my colleagues and manager. It’s a great environment to work in.

Tom

Building Surveyor

Coming from the private sector where it’s all profit driven and you’re treated as a number, I found the council has a human touch when it comes to people management. There’s a sense that senior people are willing to take on board what younger workers have to say and embrace new ideas. It’s a friendly and positive place to work.
